People who commit and continue to commit crimes know they could go to prison and loose their freedom and be without their families if caught but they still commit crimes. That would suggest they don't give a second thought for their victims, don't care about their freedom and couldn't care less about their families. Why?
The threat of being imprisoned should be a deterrent to would be criminals and repeat offenders alike but it isn't. We have over 80 000 people incarcerated and increasing in number, (EIGHTY THOUSAND) that's a lot of able bodied people.
Incarceration means that inmates more often than not share a cell that has a color TV with a choice of channels; they also have tea and coffee making facilities and can smoke in their cells, lucky them.
Prisons have a shop where inmates buy tea, coffee, sugar, and tobacco etc. They can also buy games consoles, games and clothing etc from a catalogue. Best yet if an immigrant European Citizen commits a crime and goes to prison our political leaders will reduce their sentence, let them go and give them three thousand pounds provided they sign an undertaking stating they won't come back. It's a wonder planes aren't full of inbound criminals.
I despair. Is it any wonder criminals reoffend? Most repeat offenders spend their lives in and out of young offender's institutions and prisons because of the lack of political will and guts to create a deterrent, a focused education system that includes prison visits by school children, plea bargaining, and a harsh prison system coupled the reintroduction of conscription into the forces would go a long way to reducing prisoner numbers and prevent numbers rising. Sentences should fit the crime not the availability of cell places. We all believe in human rights but if you commit human wrongs you should forfeit your human rights and in extreme cases I believe we should consider the restoration of the death penalty.
